Ice dam prevention is a serious business and if you're in the market for heated cables, we know you have several options to choose from. At J.S. Electrical LLC, we are here to help you determine which cables best fit your needs while staying within your budget. Choose from Constant Wattage Cables or Self-Regulating Cables to help with modest amounts of snow accumulation and ice dam prevention.
During larger snowfalls, cables can result in the reformation of ice dams between, on top, and around the cables' zigzag pattern, as tunnels will not form in the snow pack to allow water pass. It should be noted that for best overall protection, we recommend the use of roof deicing panels.
Traditional zigzag heat cables, whether self-regulating or constant wattage, work moderately well during modest amounts of snow accumulation and are not designed to clear your entire roof edge. Rather, they melt away ice and snow in the area immediately surrounding the cables. They are a cost effective solution, but consumers should note that there are inherent risks with using cables during large storms or when multiple storms dump excessive amount of snow. Cables will also be visible during warm weather monthly and can be an unsightly reminder that winter will be back again!
We use commercial grade Danfoss RX Cables provide the protection needed to prevent ice dams and build-up from damaging residential buildings, roofs, and gutters. Danfoss RX constant watt heating cables ensure maximum energy efficiency and are designed for use with metal or asphalt roofing. Durable and high-quality materials provide excellent moisture, corrosion and impact protection. Simply plug the RX cables directly to the power receptacle.
No matter which option you choose for your home, we recommend that both types be installed with a rain/snow sensor.
